Pirate dinner IV - Puppy Treats Design

Today, it was Pirate Dinner. Some very talented friends of mine and I hold a monthly design challenge, that means getting together, eating some good home made food and laughing a lot. Each month's host proposes a theme for the challenge and gives us especial directions if needed, we make a design and bring it with us. There is no pressure, it's just to have fun designing.

January's challenge was Puppy Treats.

This was my design.

I thought I will tell you a bit about my creative process. The name that was picked for me was "Lick, sniff and bite" which is a very dirty sounding name. So, I wanted to make into a yuppy, kinda classy design to add some drama. I was thinking that it would be a good contrast. I started by doing some research and drew some title options in my sketchbook:

I liked how the last one on the right looked, so I went on the computer and worked on the idea, tried different typefaces and color combinations. I usually choose few font options with Font Book, but I am open to try other things along the way.

I start designing on black and white first, then I keep duplicating the logo and make slight changes to it until I am happy with the result, same with color schemes, diecuts and all. After a few hours I decide to stop and make a decision. I choose a design and then apply it to the different flavors. I like to see how the idea will be implemented in series. That helps me decide how big the type should be (for instance I had to reduce the type on the flavor because longer titles needed smaller type and I wanted to keep it consistent). Or what color schemes I am using, I had to make changes to my bacon color scheme in favor of the beef flavor.

This is what my file looked like when I finished.

For a professional job I would probably had more comps and more sketches but this is just for fun. And I had lots of fun in fact this is what I devoted pretty much the whole Saturday afternoon to.

Daily Creation Challenge #30 and last!!!

For my last challenge I wanted to do something that I was supposed to do months ago. I finished the final business card comp for my cousin's craft label. It's a comp, subject to improve. She makes awesome handmade jewelry and accessories. I am not sure that she has a website but if she does I will update the post.

And now I am "free". But I have a very tasty project lined up next. I will be making illustrations for a friend's website. Will keep you updated!

The daily challenge has been an awesome experience and I have been thinking in other types of challenges to do next. I will leave it for 2012, since I will leave for a couple weeks and go home in Spain, and will be very busy with the holidays. Also, my brother has asked me for a drawing to put on his gaming stick and that has to happen before the wise men day!

So... I was thinking to make a nice looking Alice in wonderland piece and many people liked the last illustration I made of Alice. So I decided to make the rabbit as a reflect of Alice. I think I will put them together in a image and color the whole thing. Sounds like a good mini project.

Challenge #27!! I can't believe that I made it this far!

This is a piece that Diana Torres and I made together. She is a very good friend of mine and an excellent artist. She created the idea and the line work I applied color to it. It was super super fun! Diana and I need to do this again for sure.

Creation Daily Challenge #26

I have the pleasure to show (at last) the cover of the book Antonio Cartier and I have made. We won the 5th Children's book contest of Fundación Progreso y Cultura in Spain. The price was some money and the publication of the book! We both are pretty excited.

As os now, they are printing about 500 copies and they won't be for sale. Instead they will donate the books to kids in events for children. I think that is wonderful. Don't despair though, We are thinking on other ways to publish the book and make it available for everybody. :)

The book is about a round kid named Otto that moves to a Square town and he has some trouble to fit in at first. But hey! We are all different but we are all the same after all! Right?

Daily Creation Challenge #2-20

I just felt like doing something fun. I had a blast doing the challenge 17, so I wanted to use the same technique again. I am getting faster and faster every time. Also inspired easily, and this is good news since is the purpose of the challenge!

I also wanted to participate in this week's Illustration Friday. The topic is "Brigade", I thought that this character is part of a brigade during WWII but she is not very disciplined! She looks boyish because she was trying to fool the officers to enroll pretending to be a boy. She did make it in!

I made it with Photoshop CS5, 1 h and 9 min. I know, because I made a video of this one. I will post as soon as I edit it.

This is a watercolor demo I did for the class Objects, Fashion and lifestyle Illustration at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. It was an awesome experience, I talked to the students about my job as an illustrator and art director and showed them one of my approachs to paint a handbag. It was really enlightening to listen to fellow artists and get to understand how it feels today to be about to graduate. I think it was a good talk for all of us.

In broad lines, I first sketch, ink with watercolor, apply big masses of color and work out the values. Texture is last which was applied with colored pencils. I can't wait to go again!

STEP 6: FINAL ADJUSTEMENTS

6.1 Realize that it's been feeling like saturday since Thursday... It is indeed awesome.
6.2 be ready to finish this thing
6.3 Add some adjustment layers on top of all the layers. Mine were:

6.3.1 A pattern layer to add some texture to the whole illustration (I used a pattern that I made with acrylic paint)

6.3.2 A photo filter layer with a Warming filter (85) to unify the colors a bit and also to make his face a little warmer.
6.3.3 Levels layer to push the darks and make the illustration more vibrant since the colors were a little washed out.

6.4 Sign and sing
6.5 Be proud.

STEP 5! COLOR!

5.1 Eat a turkey sandwich with stuffing for breakfast, you'll thank me later.

5.2 Time for vampires. Rent or get a movie on demand about vampires!

5.3 Add a Multipy layer on top of your other layers and add some more values and color.

5.4 Create a new layer on top in normal mode. I sometimes paint it all on that layer, like it was acrylic or some times I create two or three to be safe or just to look at the progress at end because it's fun to do.
I just started to create my own brushes with textures and it's super fun. You can emulate pretty much every technique, but acrylic-ish looking brush it's probably the easiest to get right.

5.5 After two layers that is what I made. Just about done.

4.5 Paint something on your computer to not think in the turkey that is coming soon!

4.6 Add a layer on Overlay mode and give some color that will indeed overlay on the values you already created. Set the layer to a lower opacity if it ended up being too bright. This was my layer:

4.7 Go and enjoy some good turkey and sweet potatoes, you should be very very hungry now!

2.1 Create a Multiply layer on top of the layer with your sketch.

2.2 Bored already? Go to the kitchen and open the fridge.

2.3 Realize there isn't anything you wanna eat right now.

2.4 Close the fridge.

2.5 Go back to your computer.

2.6 Shade your illustration thinking "value". It doesn't have to be perfect, it will help us to color the illustration without losing the overall illumination.

1.2 Think about vampires.

1.3 Make your sketch. I made mine in a really small piece of paper like 2.5"x 1.5" (about 6 x 4 cm), because I feel less intimidated by small surfaces, ha.

Don't be afraid of shading and leave lines everywhere because we will cover them or we might leave them to add some handmade effect.

I did these tattoo designs for my very good friend Brittany. These are my interpretations of the Dwennimmen, an african symbol of 2 ram's horns coming together. It a symbol of humility together with strength. The ram will fight fiercely against an adversary, but it also submits humbly to slaughter, emphasizing that even the strong need to be humble. Lately I am pretty happy. I feel free!

As promised, today something more fun. Lately I have been triying to get back to my roots, to when I drew and painted just for fun, so I thought of making something mixing the lolita series I made in 2007 (http://fav.me/dtwelw) and my fascination for Alice in wonderland. I love drawing lolita... I wonder why I haven't done in so long! For being a drawing for the daily challenge I am pretty happy. I plan to color it and fix some drawing issues, but that will be tomorrow: not only Daily creation day but also Project Night with my boyfriend.

Creation challenge. Day 1. Creation #1

I have been really busy creating illustrations for a children's book with my friend Antonio Cartier. He wrote the story and I made the illustrations. I have to say that is was a heck a lot of work, but it was worth it. I ended up going on a bender for 36 hours, (secretly I am kind of proud that I could manage so many hours awake without crashing. It reminded me to college days!). The book was made for a contest, we hope to get a prize! we have turned the book in today, and we will find out in a month or less. I am really excited. I wish I could show something but the work has to be unpublished ever, so I will keep it secret for now.

The day that I finished I went to a live drawing session with a fellow illustrator and we had a blast. I hope to take a picture tomorrow to what I did. I would like to go next week, it was so relaxing and great. Definitely going again.

But what this post is about..... is about creating! I was so busy creating that book that now that I am done I feel I can do so much with my day that I have been doing so I decided that I am auto-enter in a auto imposed challenge.

The challenge is to create 1 thing a day and post it. very simple. The goal is to get a combo of 30 creations. If I miss one day, the count starts on 1 again.

The summer is about to end! Not cool! xD

First time doodling with Paint tool sai... I have a lot to learn! But I like so far. It does remind me to Open canvas quite a bit.

I really felt like doing something veeeery manga. Easy and without meaning, just for fun, like I use to do when I was in High School, when illustration was a hobby and not my career. HA, Funny. I indeed enjoyed painting this piece.

Since I use to paint a lot of beach girls when I used to paint with Open canvas back in 2002.... It just seem appropriate!

Coffee mug!

It was my friend's 30th birthday and I decided to get her a mug from Starbucks so everybody could sign it at her party so she would have a nice "souvenir" from her own birthday. It just happen that when I get there the mug didn't come with the porcelain pen! oh no! I had to take it bag and I painted it all myself. Gave it to her yesterday, she liked it!

I learnt quite a bit from the porcelain painting, harder than I thought. But it was fun!!

IF: Cultivate

They are having some good progress, and soon will go back to Africa to keep building up the veggies and the hope of the people in the entire village.

Design club - February 2011

Two of my friends and I have started a somewhat design club. They are both graphic designers. Every month we will propose an assigment, get together, make dinner and present our designs. Our first assigment was making a commemoration badge for the Chicago Blizzard.

My friends presented very awesome designs. We all did them kinda last minute but this club is meant to have fun, so everything goes. I had so much fun painting mine. I think if I had more time I would've changed some of my composition decisions. But I am happy for what turned out due to the joy painting it gave me.

My idea was to make a snowflake shaped badge. I wanted to make it art deco style and it developed into a inverted stained glass type thing.

I had to add an outline because I couldn't keep my eye focus inside the illustration. It made it better but something is missing... anyway, super fun to paint thought!

Así se ve desde el extranjero

Mi buen amigo Antonio Cartier me pidió que escribiera como veo España desde el extranjero. Acompaño el texto con una ilustración que simboliza la división de mi corazón entre dos mundos separados por miles de kilómetros, Chicago (EEUU) y Madrid (España).

Hacía mucho que no dibujaba muñecas, y me pareció que el hablar de mi experiencia personal era el momento perfecto de recordar lo vivido.

Me fui de España llorando. Hace 3 años y 3 meses me fui de casa de mis padres, de Madrid, de todo lo conocido para irme a Chicago a estudiar un año en The School of the Art Institute mi último curso de Bellas Artes. Acabé mi carrera, trabajé duro en la escuela, encontré un novio yankee, busqué trabajo, y me contrataron como ilustradora en una empresa de juguetes en Chicago. Me ascendieron a Directora de Arte en Abril. Y aquí sigo, ¿volvería? sin duda, pero aunque echo de menos la morcilla , siento que no debo. Hoy por hoy, me gusta mucho mi trabajo y las perspectivas de encontrar algo similar a lo que hago en España son más bien nulas. Este es mi momento de aprender y de exprimir al máximo la oportunidad que se me ha brindado. Aquí cuando valoran a un trabajador lo hacen en serio, hay posibilidades de ascender y de mejorar tu sueldo, y a mí me lo han demostrado.

Sin embargo, una de las cosas que he aprendido es, sin duda, a valorar España. No siempre hacemos las cosas bien, ni nuestros políticos son los más entregados, ni todos los sistemas funcionan, ni los salarios son como nos gustarían… Probablemente los salarios son mas altos aquí que en España, pero todo tiene un precio. En EEUU solo hay 6 días festivos en comparación a los 14 españoles. No existe la “baja”, solo tengo 3 días para ponerme enferma al año, lo que significa que si me rompo una pierna tengo que seguir yendo al trabajo y si me rompo una mano se me suspende el sueldo o tengo que usar mis vacaciones hasta que se me acaben. Hay gente que si le ingresan en el hospital pierde su trabajo. Olvídate de la seguridad social. ¿He mencionado que el trabajador medio tiene 8 días de vacaciones pagados al año?. Yo empecé con 10, todo un lujo. Mi tipo de sueldo es “salary” y no me pagan horas extras, y de verdad que hago.

No hay contratos temporales, todos somos “fijos” desde el día 1. Pero te pueden despedir en cualquier momento. Evidentemente si te despiden, no no te dan nada, ni indemnización, ni finiquito, ni nada. Al menos si que cobran paro si han trabajado más de 6 meses.

En España, muchos se quejan de los impuestos, pero creedme, merece la pena pagar por sentirte seguro, poder ir al médico sin miedo a la factura, y saber que si algo te pasa no vas a perder tu casa por lo que cuesta el hospital.

Desde luego hay cosas muy buenas por estos lares también. Las películas las estrenan antes, podemos ver la ceremonia de los Oscar sin que sea de madrugada, te ponen vasos de agua en los restaurantes nada mas sentarte, mis euros valen más, los sueldos son más altos, y los ordenadores más baratos. La factura de móvil no, esa es más cara.

Demostrado está que el sistema americano no es el mejor del mundo y el español probablemente tampoco lo sea. Pero lo que trato de contar con todo este parrafote es que hay que fijarse en lo bueno que tenemos en España, quejarse solo un poquito y ponerse manos a la obra para arreglar lo que no es tan bueno. Que el que se queja rascándose la barriga en el sofá no soluciona nada.

Aprecia lo que tienes, que ya lo echarás de menos.

Estoy trabajando en la web, en una nueva identidad, pronto estará acabada! Me encanta estar colaborando con Antonio en su blog, estoy muy contenta por poder hacer ilustraciones más maduras y sobretodo comprometidas. Además es un buen ejercicio el hacer más ilustraciones fuera de mi trabajo from nine to five.

Me dió miedo que la ilustración diera lugar a equívocos por los colores azul y rojo... desde luego no tiene nada que ver con partidos sino con el estado de ánimo de los demandantes y del "acusado-a". La textura es un papel teñido a mano escaneado por mi.

Más, quieren más. Y yo también quiero dibujar más y que nieve menos.

El post the Antonio Cartier explica elocuentemente como podemos mejorar la economía española invirtiendo en FORMACIÓN. Pero la Formación que Antonio sugiere es una formación diferente a la de los másteres y los cursos. La educación y colaboración entre puestos de trabajo puede hacer que una empresa rentabilice al máximo las tareas que desempeñan los empleados. Todo es posible si cada empleado (desde el conserje hasta el CEO) tuvieran la voluntad de escuchar las sugerencias de los demás.

Oir es muy fácil pero escuchar no.

Antes de hacer el equipo, pensé en hacer una ilustración bien distinta. Iba a representar un juego de tirar de la cuerda en el que el equipo que estaba claramente ganando era el equipo heterogéneo formado por presidente, mensajero, trabajador de fábrica etc. Ganaban al clásico equipo formado por trabajadores dirigidos (no siendo ayudados) por el jefe de planta.

El equipo me pareció más claro al final, y dado que últimamente hemos comprobado en España el poder de unificación que tiene el fútbol me pareció mucho más apropiado.

Bajo el slogan ¡quéjate! ¿qué propones? se pone en funcionamiento la plataforma Lo vas a lograr, una iniciativa de la Junta de Andalucía, que con la ayuda de las redes sociales, va a escuchar a los jóvenes. Así se recopilarán quejas y propuestas para crear y mejorar el nuevo Plan Integral de Empleo Juvenil.

Gracias a la web Lo vas a lograr el Plan Motiva 2.0 se llenará de sugerencias de los más afectados por el desempleo, los jóvenes. Los residentes en Andalucía entre 18 y 30 años están invitados a compartir sus experiencias, quejas e iniciativas. Por su participación podrán ser otorgados con una estancia en el extranjero para estudiar un nuevo idioma, una beca para un curso de formación o un fin de semana multi aventura con amigos.

El plan está contando una participación muy buena y se prevee que el Plan Integral de Empleo Juvenil se presente en un mes.

Una excelente idea. Solo espero que los premiados elijan los cursos de idiomas o los de formación.

IF: Frozen

Justita pero esta semana también participo en Illustration Friday. El tema de esta semana es Frozen (Congelado). ¡Este niño aunque esté congelado no perdona su helado! Esta vez, he querido probar un sombreado más realista y he de decir que me ha gustado mucho realizar esta pieza. La próxima vez probaré una iluminación más dificil! El cucurucho deja algo que desear pero así se queda. Coloreado: 4-5 horas

This week Illustration Friday's topic is Frozen. I thought I could not get this one done on time, but I made it! This little kid could be frozen but he won't say no to ice-cream time! I wanted to experiment with a more realistic rendering, and I liked doing it. I am not satisfied with the ice-cream, but it's time to say "done". I'll try something more difficult next time! Color rendering: 4-5 hours.

Es la primera vez que participo en Illustration Friday, el tema de esta semana es ¡Gérmenes! Cuando me puse a pensar, los gérmenes me vinieron a la cabeza como un grupo aliado capaz de conquistar el mundo, asi que una reunión en círculo de un equipo de fútbol americano me pareció perfecto para ilustrar mi idea.

He pintado esta ilustración muy deprisa, asique me gustaría volver a ella más tranquilamente. Quizá no pula la ilustracion nunca. Mañana es viernes y quería llegar a tiempo a participar. Ahora me voy a la cama que mañana hay que madrugar.

This is another "remade" drawing. I think i was around 10 years old when I drew the original. I remember it was going to be a "table cloth" (that is why it has those yellow lines) but i ran out of yellow marker and it became an abstract kind of thing.
I was inspired by the kids of CHICKEN NUGGET LEMON TOOTY.

Flying Kiddos!

Lately, I feel like painting flying stuff. I might need to fly myself. I wish it could be as easy as blowing some bubbles!

I wanted to work more with pastel textures, the coloring process got really close to a real coloring with actual pastels. It was a lot of fun. I did color the characters in the same layer (shadows and lights) and it was challenging at first (i usually split main color, shadows and highlights in different layers), but its more natural to do it this way. You don't have to deal with painting in the wrong layer or searching into tons of layer to erase that small error.

Érase una vez un pez globo que quería volar

El pequeño pez globo soñaba con volar, podía inflarse como sus demás amigos pez globo pero a el no le bastaba con flotar como un pez, quería volar como un globo. El pequeño pez globo estaba muy triste y daba largos paseos en soledad. Un dia, trasteando en las profundidades del mar se encontró, entre otros muchos, un curioso artilugio. No le hubiese llamado la atención de no ser porque el lomo de aquella cosa incomprensible lucía un bonito letrero que ponia O2. Esto era incomprensible para el el pequeño pez pero vio su reflejo en el artilugio rodeado por la majestuosa O y vióse convertido en un hichado pez globo. Animoso, intentó descubrir los secretos del invento. Después de nadar a su alrededor, darle topetazos, enfadarse, enfrentarse con él a duelo y caer exhausto a su lado, un pqueño roce de su cuerpo desfallecido detonó la maravilla. El artilugio se desplomó, liberándose de años de arena y flora recién aparecida, y una burbuja salió de la negra manguera que antes estaba oculta. El pequeño pez globo, maravillado, no pudo evitar acercarse, quizá demasiado, y una transparente burbuja se coló en su gaznate. El pequeño pez, aturdido, encontróse ¡hinchado como una vaca! No podía creer su suerte. Y así, subió y subió hasta alcanzar la superficie. Sería probablemente el primer pez que franqueaba la frontera del mar. Y así viajó y viajó, hasta llegar a un pequeño pueblecito costero donde acabó en manos de un pequeño niño, Juanito, que lo cuidó y lo quiso por muchos muchos años. Y el pez globo fue feliz, pues al fin habia cumplido su sueño de volar... volar como un globo.

Una ilustración rápida para experimentar con pinceles texturados. Me ha gustado mucho pintarlo, me enganchó muchísimo.

Feliz Inauguración

¿Os habíais preguntado cómo llegan las cartas que enviáis a vuestros seres queridos? El cartero volador las lleva. Queda inaugurado este presente blog, Espirales Whimsicales.

Ayer me di cuenta de que el invierno ya está al llegar... y no me gusta. Uno de las pocas cosas que me gustan del invierno es escribir a los Reyes Magos una carta....así se me ocurrió este trabajo. La ilustración original tenia un fondo de montañas nevadas pero he preferido dejarlo más veraniego y soleado. He usado el símbolo de correos americano porque pretendo que sea una illustración promocional para USPS. Espero que os guste.

Have you ever thought of how the letters you send get to your loved ones? The flying postman delivers them.

Yesterday I realized winter is coming... and don't really love the idea. One of the few things I like from winter is writing a letter to the Wise Men (the Spanish version of Santa), and that's how I came up with this illustration. The original drawing had a background with snowy mountains, but in the end I decided to leave it more summery! I used the USPS logo cos I intend this to be a pretended promotional illustration for USPS. I hope you like it!
